When Union Rural Development Minister Gopinath Munde untimely passed away on June 3 in a road accident in the heart of the national capital, few eyebrows were raised by several clairvoyants in the nation because three family members and one close aide of the two BJP leaders had also met their end on the third day of a month.

Former union minister in Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA government, Pramod Mahajan gave up the ghost on May 3, 2006. He was shot by his brother Pravin Mahajan 13 days before he eventually passed away in a Mumbai hospital.

Exactly after a month, Mahajan’s personal assistant Vivek Moitra was found dead on June 3, 2006. Along with him, Mahajan’s son Rahul was also found in unconsciousness state.

Moitra, who was a former member of Bharatiya Janata Party's student wing, later started working for Munde. During this time, he got close to Pramod Mahajan and became his assistant. Moitra worked for 15 years as Mahajan’s aide.

Continuing with the curse of ‘number three’, Pramod Mahajan’s brother Pravin, who was serving life sentence in jail for killing his brother, also died due to brain hemorrhage on March 3, 2010.

Mahajan’s brother-in-law Munde and BJP’s tallest leader in Maharashtra also passed away on June 3, 2014 in a road accident.

It may be purely coincidental but it is safe to say that the ghost of number three has proven quite ominous for BJP’s Maharashtrian leaders.
