The movie is set to release this Friday. It is based on the real-life incident of Naval Officer K M Nanavati, who was tried for the murder of his wife's lover.

"Dear @akshaykumar... I wish you all success for your forthcoming release #Rustom," Rajinikanth, 65, tweeted.

"Rustom", directed by Tinu Suresh Desai, also stars Ileana D'Cruz and Esha Gupta. It will compete at the box-office with Hrithik Roshan-starrer "Mohenjo Daro".

Rajinikanth is not the first celebrity to tweet about "Rustom". Superstar Salman Khan, Ranveer Singh and Sonam Kapoor among others earlier made short videos to promote the film.

Rajinikanth and Akshay, 48, will share screen space for the first time in the sequel to "Robot" (2010). Directed by Shankar, "2.0" is expected to theatres in 2017.
