Mumbai: Three Indian passengers were arrested from Mumbai international airport for allegedly trying to smuggle in high-end diamond polishing powder, diamonds and gold chains worth Rs 62.82 lakh, a senior customs official said on Thursday.

Acting on a tip off, one Mahesh Mandaliya was intercepted at Chhtrapati Shivaji International Airport on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday after he passed through the green channel, the official said.

Mandaliya arrived here from Sharjah on an Air Arabia Airlines flight and upon checking his baggage, high-end diamond polishing powder, diamonds and gold chains collectively valued at Rs 62.82 lakh were recovered and subsequently seized under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962, the official said.

"Mandaliya has confessed to the crime while his statement was recorded under section 108 of the Customs Act. He also mentioned about his two other accomplices Arun Mandaliya and Lalji Bhai, who were also subsequently arrested," the official said.
