Acting on a tip-off, police along with a battalion of paramilitary force launched a combing operation and raided an area in Khunti district where they held three Maoists who were active in capital Ranchi and its adjoining areas.

Top official said the operation will prove to be a “major achievement for Jharkhand Police.”

The rebels have been operating for decades across a wide swath of central and eastern India. Their strength grew in recent times in those areas where poor, tribal villagers came into conflict with mining companies seeking resources for industrialisation.

Also, on March 14, a Maoist operative was killed during an encounter with the security forces in Lohardaga town of Jharkhand. Heavy arms and ammunition were also recovered during the search operations after the encounter.
