Daman: Three local public representatives have sought permission from President Pratibha Patil for mercy killing, citing "dictatorial and intolerant behaviour" of the Administrator of Daman and Diu. In their appeal to Patil, Municipal Council President Manojkumar Naik, Councillor Ashok Tandel and Member of District Panchayat Navin Patel have alleged that under the leadership of Administrator Narendra Kumar "we, the people of Daman, do not have any liberty of thought, expression or equality of status and opportunities".

The trio, in a signed application sent to the President, has stated Kumar is functioning like a "dictator" and he is "intolerant". Therefore, "we urge your to grant necessary permission for mercy killing". Asked about the issue, Kumar said charges leveled against him by the three men are baseless.

"Recently, I had received a complaint about irregularity in a tender process by a few Municipal Councillors and Daman Congress President. I had ordered that tenders be temporarily put on hold and preliminary inquiry be conducted," Kumar said.

Miffed over this, the trio petitioned the President, he said.
