Four Trinamool Congress leaders filed their nomination papers in Kolkata for Rajya Sabha elections on Saturday. Party chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was also present on the occasion. The party candidates who filed nominations are- Union MoS Shipping and TMC general secretary Mukul Roy, Kunal Ghosh, Nadimul Haque and Vivek Gupta. They submitted their papers to the secretary of the West Bengal Assembly.

Mukul Roy is being nominated by the party for his second consecutive term. Rest of the three are from media field. Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister claimed that her government is working for the welfare of the people of the every section of the society. She also said that she has fielded the media persons from all the three major languages-Bangla, Hindi and Urdu-as the party candidates for the Rajya Sabha polls. Even earlier, the party had nominated IAS and IPS officers, noted people from the fields of art, culture and literature.

The Chief Minister expressed her hope that the three new party nominees will come up to the expectations of the party. There are five candidates to be elected for the Upper House from West Bengal. Left front has fielded CITU General Secretary Tapan Sen. Given the strength of the left front in the state assembly, it will be able to get only one candidate elected to the Rajya Sabha this time.

However, after the TMC’s decision to field four candidates for the Upper House, its ally Congress finds it difficult to get even a single candidate of the party elected to the Rajya Sabha. The last date of filing the nomination papers is March 19 and the nominations could be withdrawn till March 22.  The election will take place on March 30.
