Sonia's attack comes just days after her son and Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi lashed out at the state government on the same issue.

“The government here colluded with chit fund companies which have looted more than 18 lakh families and ruined them,” Sonia told an election rally here.

"Poor people struggle a lot to save money for them and their kids so that they can use it when needed," she added.

Rahul had last week hit out at the Trinamool Congress government, saying that it was not taking action against those involved in the multi-crore Saradha chit fund scam and instead trying to save them.

Meanwhile, the Congress president also slammed the TMC government on the question of law and order in the state. Sonia accused the TMC government of indulging in politics on the issue of development.

"It hurts when the state government indulges in politics even in developmental work," Sonia said.

"The UPA government gave approval for the setting up of AIIMS but the past Left Front government and now the Trinamool government has not given land for it," she added.

The UPA chairperson further said there was no place for a government in ‘our democracy which does not fulfill the needs of the poor and creates obstruction in development work for political gains’.

The Congress leader also alleged that MNREGA project was not implemented properly in the state forcing the workforce to go outside West Bengal.

"It is a matter of regret that whether it is the present or the last government, development work has been overlooked," she said.
