Canning (WB): Ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader in West Bengal was allegedly shot dead by unidentified assailants at his Nagartala village home in South 24 Parganas district in the wee hours on Saturday.

The deceased leader has been identified as Manik Paik (52). He was president of the party's Canning II block committee. According to police, three bullets hit Paik whereas his wife sustained minor injury, who was beside him. The incident took place around 2 am.

According to local TMC leader, the erstwhile CPI(M) government workers are reported to be involved in the murder. However, the Left party refuting the charges alleged that it is a result of TMC’s internal bickering.

Paik, a former CPI(M) panchayat pradhan for two terms, had left the party and joined TMC in 1998.

Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting C M Jatua and Shyamal Mondal, Minister of State for Sundarban Affairs and Irrigation and Waterways visited Paik's residence to condole the death of the leader.
