New Delhi: Taking a swipe at the government, Communist Party of India (CPI) General Secretary AB Bardhan on Saturday said the tribals are being exploited by the Centre and the state governments in the name of battle against Naxals and the Army is also providing its full support to it.

“In the name of battle against Maoists the natural resources are being exploited, the Indian Army is torturing the tribals, their lands are being encroached in the name of ‘Green Hunt Operation’ launched by Home Minister P Chidambaram against the Naxals two years back,” Bardhan said while addressing a function organized in the Gandhi Peace Foundation here on Saturday by Forum Against War On People titled ‘Stop Army Encroachment In Bastar! Oppose Indian State’s War On People!’

Terming the battle against the Maoists by the Centre as ‘open loot’ he said, “The Centre is promoting anti-people activity. The indigenous industries are being sidelined and preference is being given to private companies which is intolerable.”

Echoing similar sentiments on the Centre’s ‘Operation Green Hunt’, former IAS officer B D Sharma said, “After two years of its launch, more than hundred people have been killed in the name of this Operation. In Andhra Pradesh, this ‘Hunt’ forced tribal people to flee from their homes.”

Mocking at the government renowned author Arundhati Roy said, “Democracy is a futile word in India. Everybody is engaged in fulfilling his or her own interests and the common people are being crushed in this rat race.”

Blaming the police, Shashi Bhushan Pathak, general secretary of Jharkhand PUCL (People's Union for Civil Liberties) said, “In the name of Naxalites the police hold tribals as hostage. In fact, out of three crore Jharkhand population, nearly 3,000 people have been declared as traitors.”
