New Delhi: Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi on Monday stressed upon making Indian Railways more modern and accident free than that of Japanese Railways.

Distributing National Award 2011 to the rail employees, Trivedi said, “This can be possible only with the dedication of its employees. I have constituted Safety Committee comprising the experts like nuclear scientist Dr Anil Kakodkar and space scientist Dr Kasturirangan while Sam Pitodra led-Modernizing Committee has been formed to achieve the target.”

Praising the Japanese Railway, he said nobody has so far been killed in the rail accident in Japan. Only few persons were injured in rail mishap during earthquake, added the Minister.

The Railway has to attain at least 11 percent growth rate for maintaining 8 percent national growth rate, Trivedi said, while stressing on laying rail tracks to the ports, industrial hubs and factories so that more revenue can be generated through goods trains.

It is a well known fact that fare hike will generate only Rs 3-4 crore revenue while thousands of crores will come out through developing the railway stations.

The Trinamool Congress leader has also announced to form Station Development Corporation.

The railway station should be equipped with all the modern facilities like library, mall, multiplex, restaurant and hotel in line with the air port, Trivedi added.
