Kolkata: Rallying behind outgoing Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi, rebel Trinamool Congress MP Kabir Suman termed the forced resignation of the minister and his party colleague as injustice and sheer attack on democratic ethos.

“The manner in which Trivedi has been pressed to tender his resignation as the Railway Minister is very unfortunate. This is a brutal attack on the institution of democracy,” Suman said.

Underlining the importance of the Railway Ministry, the folk singer turned politician said, “The Railway Minister did not propose the fare hike to fill his own treasury.

Issues like passenger-safety and providing facilities to the commuters are the prime challenges and can’t be overlooked. In such a situation, fare hike becomes a necessity. He (Trivedi) cannot be harassed for obliging his duties as a Railway Minister.”

“Before the rail fare hike, transportation fares were also raised. But Trinamool leadership didn’t register any protest. Then why they (Trinamool) are protesting now,” asked Suman.

As per the sources, Suman during his telephonic conversation with Trivedi, has appealed him not to resign as the Railway Minister.
