Beijing: At least eight people were killed and six others injured when a truck carrying explosive chemicals blasted in a parking lot in South West China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

The blast took place on Tuesday in the Litang Township of Binyang County when workers were unloading the truck which carried flammable chemicals including potassium chlorate and carbon powder, local officials said.

A preliminary investigation showed that workers' carelessness may have triggered the explosion, a news agency quoted an official as saying.

The fire from the blast engulfed over 20 cars in the parking lot, which used to be a gas station, said the spokesman.

He said that two people were severely wounded and four suffered slight injuries in the incident.

The fire has been put out and further investigation is underway.
