Dhenkanal (Odisha): A man and his son were charred to death and six others suffered serious burn injuries after a fire broke out in a cracker factory in Odisha's Dhenkanal district on Friday.

The incident took place at Kansara village in Hindol sub-division as a blast in explosive substances triggered off the fire during cracker manufacturing process,Sub-Collector Umakanta Swain said.

At least two persons, identified as Lochan Amata (60) and his son Bulu (20) died in the incident, while six others sustained serious burn injuries, he added.

The injured have been admitted to a nearby government hospital, while efforts were on to ascertain the circumstances that led to the mishap, the police said.

As the fire spread rapidly in the area, about 60 houses comprising around 200 rooms were gutted in the mishap, they said adding fire tenders from nearby places were pressed into service to control the blaze.

Senior officials rushed to the village and quick steps were initiated to provide relief and assistance to the affected people, official sources said.
