Ranchi: Jharkhand Information Commission on Tuesday punished two government officials for not furnishing information under the Right to Information (RTI) Act and not turning up on the hearing day before the Commission.

A fine of Rs 25, 000 each has been imposed on Gumla Civil Surgeon Dr T Hembrum and information officer cum in-charge of Kuju police station, Manoj Kumar. The amount will be deducted in five equal installments from their salaries.

Civil surgeon-cum-Public Information Officer (PIO) Hembrum was asked to provide point-by-point details sought in the RTI appeal filed by Hemant Kumar till April 25. While he failed to meet the deadline, he also did not appear for the hearing.

He was summoned and a show-cause notice was issued to him on May 18. Hembrum failed to provide provided information despite summon and did not appear before the Commission.

A fine was then imposed on him by Information Commissioner Baijnath Mishra for ignoring the instructions and not giving information under the Act.

In another case, Manoj Kumar, information officer cum in-charge of Kuju police station was also summoned on May 24 after he failed to appear before the Commission for hearing on April 29.

He did not furnish information to RTI applicant Suresh Munda.

While hearing Kumar’s case, apart from imposing fine on them, the Commission directed the Jharkhand DGP and Ramgarh SP to take disciplinary action against him.
