Raipur: Two brothers were killed and one other villager injured in an encounter between the police and Maoists in naxal-affected Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh on Thursday, a senior police official said.
"Two brothers were killed and one other person injured during gun-battle between district police force and ultras in the forests under Mirtur police station limits of the district," Additional Superintendent of Police Vivek Shukla told.
"The deceased were identified as Banjan Kudru (28) and his elder brother Banjam Raghunath (32) while the identity of the injured was yet to be known," he said adding the injured was admitted to Maharni Hospital in Jagdalpur.
The incident took place when the police party was on a combing operation in Mirtur area. As they reached near forest area of Matpal village, the ultras fired at them indiscriminately, they said.
The forces opened retaliatory firing following which naxals fled into the jungle, the official said.
After the encounter, the search party recovered bodies of two villagers from the spot beside a muzzle loading guns, an IED explosive and couple of bows and arrows, he said.
The deceased were later identified as brothers hailing from Matpal village and the police have not found any connection between the Naxals and the deceased, he said adding that further probe was on.
