A police officer said that security forces surrounded a house in Ahmad Nagar, 10 km from the Lal Chowk city centre on Sunday evening, following intelligence reports about guerrillas hiding inside.

An operation to flush out the militants was launched Monday morning after negotiations to secure their surrender failed.

"When challenged to surrender, the holed-up militants started firing at the security forces, injuring one policeman," the police officer said.

A number of terrorist attacks have transpired in Kashmir recently. The security measures have been beefed up in the state, keeping Lok Sabha elections in mind.

Recently, terrorists had also attacked a National Conference leader that claimed the lives of two policemen.
