New Delhi/Chennai (Agencies): Country's largest two-wheeler maker Hero Honda, other players like TVS Motor Company and Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India opened the current year on a positive note logging good sales growth in January.

Hero Honda Tuesday confirmed that its sales increased 20 percent at 466,524 units during January 2011 as against 389,802 during the same period of 2010.

"This is the ninth consecutive month of four lakh-plus sales, coming on the back of five-lakh plus sales each in October and December 2010," Anil Dua, senior vice president for marketing and sales at Hero Honda Motors, said in a statement.

In the financial year so far - April 2010 to January 2011, the cumulative sales of the company increased by 16 percent at 44,14,537 units, compared to 38,03,396 units over the corresponding period last year.

Rival TVS Motor Company has also reported a sales growth of 30 percent for January.

The company sold 165,152 units (two-wheelers 161,725 units, three-wheelers 3,427 units) last month, up from 127,288 units (two-wheelers 125,578 units, three-wheelers 1,710 units) sold during January 2010, a statement said.

The cumulative sales for April 2010-January 2011 stand at 1,678,048 units (two- wheelers 1,646,827 units, three-wheelers 31,221 units).

The sales break up of two-wheelers comprise scooters 40,736 units, motorcycles 67,721 units and mopeds 53,268 units last month.

During January 2010, the company had sold 25,509 scooters, 54,498 motorcycles and 45,371 mopeds.

Last month, the company exported 19,498 two-wheelers as against 16,074 units shipped out in January 2010.

Japanese maker Honda Motorcycle reported nine percent volume growth for last month as compared to January 2010 sales.

Last month the company sold a total of 129,110 units (motorcycles 58,365 units, scooters 70,745 units) as against 118,571 units (motorcycles 47,185 units, scooters 70,756 units) sold in January 2010.
