Thiruvananthapuram,(Agencies): Congress-led UDF Opposition members in the Kerala Assembly on Tuesday staged a walkout, alleging large-scale irregularities in appointments for positions in nine new public sector undertakings and autonomous bodies like Universities.

Replying to a notice for an adjournment motion moved by UDF on the issue, Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan termed the allegations as baseless and said the government had appointed more than 1.50 lakh people through Kerala Public Service Commission (KPSC) in the last 4.5 years.

He pointed out that the government had also lifted the recruitment ban imposed by the previous UDF regime.

In PSUs,all appointments were made only though professional agencies, the Chief Minister said.

Congress member PC Vishunath alleged that the LDF government was indulging in back door appointments, bypassing the Kerala Public Service Commission.

Education Minister MA Baby said all due procedures had been followed in University appointments and that the government would hand over appointments to the KPSC.

"An amendment to university connected laws is on," he said.

After the replies of Achuthanandan and Baby, Speaker K Radhakrishnan refused leave for the motion.

Not satisfied with the government's reply, UDF members led by Congress deputy leader G Karthikeyan staged a walkout.
