Thiruvananthapuram,(Agencies):The Opposition in Kerala Assembly on Monday staged a walkout to protest Speaker K Radhakrishnan rejecting discussion on an adjournment motion against Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan who had allegedly tried to 'influence' a Judicial Commission probing a hooch tragedy case as the LDF convener in 2000.

Congress leader Arayadan Muhammed raised the issue based on a letter written to CPI-M state leadership by P Sasi, then political secretary of Chief Minister EK Nayanar alleging that Achuthanandan had tried to influence the Justice Mohankumar Commission which looked into the Kalluvathukal liquor tragedy for refusing to follow his direction in it.

Replying to the notice for the motion,Achuthanandan rejected the allegation and said it was an attempt to divert people's attention from the 'ice cream parlour sex scandal,'allegedly involving IUML leader PK Kuhalikutty.

Achuthanandan said if any such attempts had been made,Justice Mohan Kumar himself would have brought the matter to the notice of the state government.

As nothing like that happened, the allegations are baseless, he said.

Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan concurred with the Chief Minister's view, saying it an effort to tarnish the image of Achuthanandan, "who is waging a relentless struggle against the sex mafia in the state."

Balakrishnan also said that the government had not come across any such letters written by Sasi.

Muhammed demanded that the government either register a case against Achuthanandan for 'influencing' the Commission or against P Sasi, former secretary of party's Kannur District Committee for levelling false charges.

After the replies of Achuthanandan and Balakrishnan, the Speaker refused leave for the motion, prompting Congress-led UDF Opposition members to walk out.

Though Sasi was recently removed from the post of Kannur District secretary on health grounds, there were allegations that he had misbehaved with party functionaries.

The CPI(M) had also appointed a two-member commission to look into the allegations.

Sasi apparently irked over certain comments by Achuthanandan recently on his health ,had written to Party Secretary Pinarayi Vijayan seeking to be relieved of all responsibilities in the party.

In the letter, he had stated that Achuthanandan had been nursing personal grudge against him ever since he refused to follow his directions on the tragedy which claimed 52 lives.
