Kanpur: Amidst the holy bath for Mahakumbh starting from January 14, senior BJP leader Uma Bharti on Friday slammed Akhilesh Yadav led Samajwadi Party government over increasing pollution in River Ganga.

Bharti had carried inspection along River Ganga en-route Bijnor and Kanpur ahead of Mahakumbh mela.

Expressing her concern over the adverse effects on health of the saints and other devotees, the Ganga Samagra Abhiyan convenor said that pollution in the sacred river is increasing unabated and no sincere efforts have been made by the state government to check it.

“The water of Ganga is turning acidic day-by-day due to open sewage and industrial wastes falling into it. This will badly affect the health of devotees who will take sacred bath during the Mahakumbh,” said Bharti.

Taking on Urban Development Minister Azam Khan, she said, “We will expose the false promises made by the SP government before the saints in Allahabad.”

Bharti had earlier demanded heritage status for River Ganga.
