Patna: National heritage status for Ganga was demanded on Thursday by a body headed by BJP leader Uma Bharti in view of the sanctity of the river.

It is not enough to merely give national river status to the river which should be given national heritage status, 'Ganga Samagra' member and BJP leader Siddharth Nath Singh told reporters in Patna.

To create awareness among the people on cleanliness of the river, he said the apolitical body would launch a campaign to press for the status to the river at Gangasagar in West Bengal on September 21 which would conclude at Gangotri (Uttarakhand) on October 28.

Climate expert R K Pachauri, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar and Samajwadi Party have extended their support to the 'Clean Ganga Campaign', he said adding MPs of all political parties and environment experts would be roped in.
