New Delhi: Responding to the request of 63 schools of Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) sans any drinking water facility, the urban local body has decided to distribute water bottle to 98,000 students studying in these institutions.  MCD’s education committee has decided to kick-start the project from Children’s Day (November 14).

It is worth mentioning that a total of 10 lakh students are studying in 1,729 MCD schools. Out of which, 98,000 students of 63 MCD are deprived of water as these institutions lack drinking water arrangement.

After the issue was left in abeyance by the higher authorities, the Education Department of MCD decided to provide bottle to students so that they can bring water from their home. Earlier, the MCD on several occasions had written letter to Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit informing her about the water crisis in these educational institutes. All the efforts in this context failed to derive the desire results.

According to Chairman of the Education Department, Mahender Nagpal “A scheme for supplying water to the 63 schools under the eight zones of MCD was planned earlier but it did not materialize.”

The project will start from November 14, and within a week all the students will get bottles from the urban local body.

“By Tuesday, a complete list of such schools will be prepared and forwarded to the Chief Minister.” Nagpal added.
