Lucknow: The fitness level of men-in-khaki in Uttar Pradesh has always remained under scanner, and the recent internal tests of the police department to promote Constables to Sub Inspectors rank again brought the much debated issue on the surface.

Expected to be on duty for round the clock, more than three dozen police Constables fell unconscious in various districts of the state while running a 10 kilometre race which was a part of the physical examination for them.

As many as 11 Constables, who fainted while participating in the race in Azamgarh district, were rushed to the district hospital for treatment. A Constable identified as Anisuzzaman (42) expired during the treatment in the hospital. Three other Constables were reported to be in a critical condition and have been rushed to Varanasi for further treatment.

The race started at 6.30am in which 99 constables appeared for the physical exam on Wednesday. The applicants who appeared in the test held in Lucknow, Azamgarh and Kanpur could not bear the humid climate and broke down during the physical examination.

It was a similar scenario in Kanpur, as a Constable had to be rushed to Intensive Care Unit after he fell unconscious in the physical examinations.
