Lucknow: The Allahabad High Court order on October 19 has left the Uttar Pradesh in a confused condition over conducting the urban local body election in the state.

HC has ordered to the UP government to issue the notification for the polls by October 31 and had asked the state Election Commission to conduct the urban local body election by November 15. However, going by the string of developments, both UP government as well as the state Election Commission are expected to miss the stipulated deadline. A meeting of state Election Commission of Sunday failed to arrive on any consensus.

During the meeting, Principal Secretary Urban Development said, “Once we receive the Census-2011 data, the notification will be issued after completing the delimitation and reservation process.”

In letter to the Registrar General and Census Commissioner Dr C Chandramouli, Census Director said the Census-2011 data will be issued by March 2013.  The HC will decide the date of local body elections.

As per the rule, the EC can declare the dates only after the state government notification.
