New Delhi: At a time when the common people are reeling under price rise, the Central Government has decided to provide some relief to them by making essential drugs cheaper.

The decision was taken in the meeting of Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs and the Union Cabinet on Thursday approved new drug pricing policy under which the government will fix the maximum prices of all the 348 essential drugs.

The drugs for life threatening disease like Cancer will get cheaper by at least 15-20 percent. However, some cheap drugs may also become costlier with the implementation of new drug pricing policy.

The government has also extended the list of essential medicines from 78 to 348. The list includes medicines used for Cancer, AIDS and depression.

According to the new policy, the average price of all the brands will be the maximum price. The government is claiming that prices will be slashed by at least 15-20 percent.
