New Delhi: In an effort to ease traffic congestion on Delhi roads, the Union Urban Development Ministry planned to levy congestion charge on vehicles in the national capital.

According to the sources in ministry, there is a need to explain the benefits of congestion charge in order to implement it soon.

In a letter to Chief Secretary, Sudhir Krishna, Secretary, Union Urban Development Ministry said that implementation of congestion charge will reduce the pollution rate. Moreover, the common people will prefer public transport due to the imposition of congestion tax on private vehicles.

Apart from this, Urban Development Secretary expressed concerns over the increased number of privatevehicles. He said that growing number of personal vehicles has worsened the vehicular traffic and it has become difficult to commute on the city roads. In this situation, it is necessary to dig out a solution for easing the traffic congestion.

He further stated that the implementation system of congestion charge must be transparent. The additional revenue generated by Delhi government must be utilized for improving the public transport system, he added.

The ministry has also sent two case studies from London and Singapore to the state government.
