Lucknow: Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday conducted raid at the Chandauli residence of the suspected Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (HuJI) militant Shameem, who is facing charges in connection with Varanasi blast.

Shameem, whose name had cropped up in the 2007 blast at the Sankat Mochan temple in Varanasi, has been absconding since then.

Briefing the media, special Director-General of Police, Brij Lal said there is no trace of Shamem still.

Meanwhile, relatives and other villagers have denied having any knowledge of Shameem’s whereabouts. However, police took the mobile phone of Shameem’s mother for investigating her call records.

Brij Lal further said, “Surveillance has been tightened across the state and ATS commandos have been deployed at sensitive places.”

Directions have been given to conduct intense checking at places witnessing huge foot falls, he added.
