Lucknow: Within 24 hours of her demand for quota for Muslims on the basis of their population, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati has sought reservation in government jobs for the economically backward among upper castes.

In her second letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Mayawati has put forth her demand for quota for poor in the general category.

In her letter to the PM, Mayawati has sought amendment in the Constitution to bring the Reservation Policy under the IXth Schedule of the Constitution.

She wrote that in order to uplift the economically weak among the upper castes, it was important to elevate them into mainstream through affirmative action.

Citing her meeting with the PM in 2007, Mayawati recalled that she had sought a special package for an overall development of the state. The CM highlighted that the special package would have helped in development of the backward regions like Bundelkhand and Purvanchal by clocking a 5 percent growth in the agriculture and its allied sectors.

In her letter, she further recalled that the state government had stressed on financial aid from the Centre to develop and bring the Scheduled Castes, OBCs, Minorities and the economically backward upper castes into the mainstream.
