Lucknow: The Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Mayawati sent an empty private jet to get a pair of sandals from Mumbai, leaked US diplomatic cables say according to a international news website.

Mayawati is an icon to millions of low-caste Dalits, rules over India's most populous state which is also one of the poorest in the country.

Mayawati or her office is yet to respond to the leaked cables. An official in the state government said the government was unlikely to respond.

"When she needed new sandals, her private jet flew empty to Mumbai to retrieve her preferred brand," the cables say.

Accusing UP CM of institutionalising corruption in the state, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Monday said a cable leaked by WikiLeaks only 'exposes the corrupt face and dual standards' of her regime.

'Around Rs.10 lakh were spent for bringing the sandals that cost about Rs.1,000,' he said.

'The cable has once again brought the corrupt face of Mayawati and her government before the public. It's shocking and surprising... It all shows the way public funds are being misused,' Naqvi said at a press conference here.

In the last few years, huge concrete parks have been built in the state capital, Lucknow, and Noida, a Delhi suburb, with scores of massive stone statues of Mayawati dotting the landscape.
