New Delhi: Implementing the Supreme Court order which had on April 28 upheld the Allahabad High Court’s ruling quashing provision of reservation in promotions for Caste and Scheduled Tribe (SC/ST) officers and employees, the Uttar Pradesh government on late Friday night decided to remove reservations from promotion.

State cabinet has decided to bring an ordinance to revoke the existing provisions of reservation in promotions as the state assembly is currently not in session.

For assembly’s approval, the state government will bring a formal proposal before the assembly session which is expected to be held in May second week.

Earlier, SC had scrapped the Uttar Pradesh government's decision to provide reservation benefits for SCs, STs & OBCs in promotions to higher posts saying the same was done without any sufficient data.

The Court also termed the quota as unconstitutional.

According to the sources, the state government’s decision will not be applicable for those who were promoted during the Mayawati regime under the quota.
