Lucknow: In a bid to woo the urban voters in the upcoming Assembly elections, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati has directed the Uttar Pradesh Housing Development Council (UPDC) and other development authorities to take 50 percent loan for construction of houses under the Kanshi Ram Urban Poor Housing Scheme.

The UPDC engineers have opposed the government move. The UPDC and the other development authorities are reluctant to take loan, as they will face difficulty in returning the same. The government has decided to be guarantor for loan.

In fact, the state government is in hurry to finish the construction work of 44,961 housing units in several towns in the election year, while the UPDC and the other development authorities have no adequate funds for them.

Therefore, the government has decided that the UPDC and the Authorities will take 50 percent loan of the total cost of construction.

As per decision, Lucknow, Kanpur, Ghaziabad and Allahabad Development Authorities will play the role of nodal agency for loans to other authorities.

Opposing the government move, a senior engineer said, housing schemes have already been halted due to lack of land and taking loan for construction of houses will only compound the problem.
