Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh is lagging behind other states in the implementation of the centre-sponsored schemes on development, thanks to the lackadaisical attitude of the administrative system in the state. Several welfare progammes have missed the deadlines in the state.

The UPA-I had launched its flagship scheme Jawaharlal National Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) in 2005 for the development of infrastructure in the urban areas. Under the JNNURM, the Central Government has approved the 97 projects worth Rs 6521.66 crore for the development works in several cities of Uttar Pradesh.

Under JNNURM, the Central Government has approved total of 1358 projects in 34 states. A latest report says that out of total projects, only 484 have been completed till December 2012. Uttar Pradesh is lagging behind Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Karnataka and Arunachal Pradesh in the completion of development works.

The Central Government provides 50 to 80 percent grants to the projects to be carried out under JNNURM in the states.
