Delhi: Keeping UP assembly election in mind, the Congress is trying to woo minority voters. Even its impact has been seen on the appointment of Coal India Chairman. Coal Minister Sri Prakash Jaiswal used his special powers to give additional responsibility and appoint 1979 batch UP cadre IAS Johra Chatterjee as Chairman of Coal India. She is the first lady to have appointed for the post of Chairman of Coal India.

Chatterjee was Central government’s representative in Board of Directors of Coal India. She has been given this additional responsibility as she is also performing duties as a secretary of National Commission for Women. Johra Chatterjee has been given this assignment when the PSU is in challenging state.  The company is falling short on coal productions. Chatterjee has been given made the Coal India Chairman even though she has not handled any responsibility in power sector so far. She is related to a very reputed Muslim family in UP. His father Rizwanul Hasan was 1946 Batch UP cadre IAS. Her great grandfather Sir Wazir Hasan was UP’s first Chief Justice.

From May 2007 to March 2010, Chatterjee has also served in the Information and Broadcasting Ministry as Joint Secretary.  Coal India’s present Chairman N C Jha has been relieved from his duties from January 31, 2010.
