Jashwantnagar of Itawah district, the home constituency of Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav, is considered to be the safest seat for Shivpal Singh Yadav who is the Opposition Leader in Assembly. Earlier Mulayam used to represent the seat in the state assembly. Now his younger brother Shivpal has been representing the seat since 1996.

In a one sided battle in 2007, Shivpal defeated Baba Harnarayan Yadav of the Bahujan Samaj Party. This time too, the SP leader is confident of winning the seat. The BSP is trying hard to make the fight two cornered by fielding Manish Yadav. The Congress gave ticket to Ajay Yadav while the Bharatiya Janata Party reposed faith in Rakesh Pal.

Given the caste equation in the constituency, the Yadav is in decisive position. The Shakya population is also in sizable numbers in the constituency. Yadav-Shakya combination has been supporting Mulayam in the constituency. This time too, Shivpal is banking on Yadav-Shakya equation for his victory.
