New Delhi: While Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi took the responsibility to revive party’s image in Uttar Pradesh, his sister Priyanka Gandhi campaigned in Raibareilly and Amethi, said to be the stronghold of the Congress.  But despite all their efforts to woo the voters, the party’s position remains similar to that of 2007 assembly elections.

In Raibareilly, where Priyanka was accompanied by her children, the party failed to win even a single seat.

The Congress under the leadership of Rahul had claimed to change the face of the state but the poll results clearly signify that the party itself is in deep trouble.

Apparently, the party high command was well aware that it cannot clinch more than 60-70 seats but was confident of bagging at least 40 seats in their kitty.  This might be the reason why Digvijay Singh, Rita Bahuguna Joshi and others had earlier said that ‘Rahul Gandhi is not to be blamed if Congress does not perform well in Uttar Pradesh’.  However, Rahul, very graciously conceded defeat in UP and has taken the responsibility for the poor show of the party.

Notably, Rahul’s 221 rallies and 18 road shows in 48 days failed miserably as the party couldn’t even surpass the 40 figure mark. In 2007 assembly elections, Congress had bagged only 22 seats.

Mocking the BSP, Digvijay Singh said, “This is a defeat of corrupt BSP in the state.”

Interestingly, this time the party was also aware about the ground realities in Raibareilly which could be the main reason why Priyanka was asked to address rallies with her children to woo voters. The party failed to clinch a single seat from here.

The present assembly election results will play a vital role in deciding the fate of the Congress in the 2014 general elections.
