Muzaffarnagar: A clerk in Uttar Pradesh's social welfare department who was accused of embezzling Rs 85 lakh by opening a forged account of the department on Thursday surrendered before a local court here.

Senior clerk, Anil Verma, was absconding for the last one month after it was found that he allegedly made a forged account in the name the department at United Bank of India in connivance with some officials of the bank and later withdrew Rs 85 lakh from it.

The court rejected his bail plea and sent him to 14 days judicial custody.

Meanwhile, the circle officer of the city said that police will seek police remand of the official for interrogation.

The bank manager and cashier have already been arrested.
