New Delhi: After coming under fire for conducting caste-based census, the UPA government is planning to add socio-economic and educational status of various castes in the survey.

Leader of the Lok Sabha Pranab Mukherjee said, "Whatever elements you (Opposition) want to include in the format (of the caste-based census), finalise it and give to us. We will look into all those aspects. The work for caste-based census across the country will be done from June 2011 till September 2011.”

The issue came up in the Lok Sabha during the Question Hour, leading to an adjournment of House.  After the House reassembled, Home Minister P Chidambaram pacified the members. He said, "The finance minister had mentioned about this matter during his budget speech in the Lok Sabha. The government will consider all the suggestions carefully and appropriate decision taken."

However, Sharad Yadav (JD-U), Gopinath Munde (BJP), Mulayam Singh Yadav (SP), Lalu Prasad (Rashtriya Janata Dal) and H D Devegowda (JD-S) took up the matter and demanded that the social, economic and educational status of various castes be included in the enumeration exercise as promised by the government earlier. They said, just mentioning caste would not serve any real purpose but the social, economic and educational status of various castes should be included in the census exercise.
