Sangrur: Reiterating his party’s stand on Lokpal, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary Prakash Karat said the Congress-led United Progress Alliance government needs to get the bill passed in the current session of Parliament.

Addressing the 20th state conference of Punjab CPM at Longowal, Karat said, “Every effort will be made to get the Lokpal Bill passed in the current session of Parliament.”

Karat blamed the Centre for skyrocketing inflation which has badly affected the common man. The Centre’s petrol decontrol policy has increased the fuel prices, the CPM leader added.

Commenting on the government’s decision to allow FDI in retail, Karat said, “The move will adversely affect the small retailers in the country,” adding that the CPM has constituted a joint front to take up the cause of people.

CPM state secretary Charan Singh Virdee said joint front comprising four political parties will contest all the 117 constituencies in the upcoming Assembly polls. The CPI will be allotted 13 seats, he added.

Several leaders including Vijay Mishra, Lahbar Singh, Gurmel Singh, SR Pillai, Raghunath Singh were present on the occasion.
