New Delhi: Strongly backing Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday said he has been carrying out his responsibilities with 'great dignity' in the face of 'unrelenting hostility' and the alliance stood solidly by him.

Nine years of UPA saw average 8 pc growth: PM

"The Prime Minister is carrying out his responsibility with great dignity in the face of unrelenting hostility and abuse from the opposition," Gandhi said at a function to celebrate four years of the UPA-II government.

"We respect him and we all stand by him," she added to loud applause. Gandhi's remarks come in the background of a strident attack by the opposition BJP on the Prime Minister.

On Wednesday, the BJP trained its guns on Manmohan Singh and said he was leader "neither of his party nor the country".
