Kanpur: Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) on Tuesday announced a cash award of Rs 10 lakh each to the World Cup winning team members from the state including Praveen Kumar, who was named in the Indian squad but was ruled out of the tournament due to an elbow injury.

The decision to felicitate Suresh Raina and Piyush Chawla apart from Praveen Kumar was taken during a recent Working Committee meeting at Ghaziabad, said the UPCA director Jyoti Bajpai said.

"Suresh Raina not only made Uttar Pradesh proud but helped Indian flag fly atop of the world with his brilliant performance. He has now become a strong pillar of the team," he added.

Heaping praise on Chawla, Bajpai said he played well in the league matches.

"Piyush Chawla was also brilliant in the league matches and stood by the team," the director said.

"We feel proud of our cricketers for their contribution to India's victory during the recently concluded World Cup and that is why we have decided to honour them," he added.

Bajpai insisted that Praveen also deserves the accolades since he was drafted in the World Cup team but unfortunately could not compete in the quadrennial event.
