Chandigarh: To provide basic amenities in urban areas,Punjab government will establish State Urban Development Mission (SUDM) which is an overreaching body to execute programmes and policies for the future.

A decision to this effect was taken in a high level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal in which he said that under this mission the state government would spend Rs. 8,635 crore in-order to provide 100 percent basic amenities in terms of water supply, sewerage & its  treatment plants (STPs), roads and slum development/housing for urban poor in all towns of the state during next three years.

While advocating for decentralization of power for further strengthening local bodies, Badal said that all municipalities of the state should be empowered to carry out their functions in accordance with statutes.

Remarkably the government has already spent a sum of Rs 1470 crore on various developmental projects.

He also directed the officials to complete the pending works on time and chalk out development plans for 60 more cities of the state.
