A state government spokesperson said that the award came Uttar Pradesh's way at the e-India Governance Summit 2013 organized at Hyderabad on July 23 and 24.

Earlier, the scheme to distribute free laptops and tablets to students had run into controversy. There were reports that the authorities or the members of college administrations were allegedly demanding bribe from the students for registering their names to avail the benefit.

Against the target of over 15 lakh laptops to be distributed among students passing class 12, only 79,491 were doled out till June 3. Official sources cite frequent changes in the state Secondary Education Department and the ‘dwindling interest of the state's political leadership’ as the reasons behind the delay in project.
