Lucknow: In an effort to ramp up the availability and utility of steel in rural Uttar Pradesh, the government has decided to establish five steel processing units (SPUs) in Barabanki, Lakhimpur, Jhansi, Hardoi and Mirzapur.

An agreement to set up SPUs was signed in the presence of Steel Minister Beni Prasad Verma on the occasion of a seminar organized by ASSOCHAM.

Verma said, “UP is a land of ample possibilities, which may take a fast pace, if the industries of the state start getting raw materials. My aim is to make the state a centre of prime production of steel and well-trained workers.”

“The Centre is continually working for developing UP, but the state government is not keen to lend support,” he added.

The Minister said that industrial training institutes would soon come up at Gonda, Barabanki and Jagdishpur to train 100-150 youths every year in trades like fitter, welder, electrician and computer hardware.
