Noting that Maharaj has been active in parliamentary politics since the 1980s, PCC spokesman Dhirendra Pratap said it will be befitting if he is made the Union Minister for Water Resources, a post vacated by Harish Rawat who was appointed Chief Minister of Uttarakhand.

"Satpal Maharaj has been contesting Parliamentary election since 1989 and has also defeated BJP heavyweight Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri. He has a large following too.

"So his elevation as a Cabinet Minister will motivate Congress workers besides strengthening the party's chances in the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls in Uttarakhand which accounts for five parliamentary seats," Pratap said.
