Dehradun: Aiming at proper implementation of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS), the Uttarakhand government has decided to bring MNREGS under Lokpal ambit in all the districts of the state. The state government has already selected Lokpals who will be appointed after their police verification and health check-ups are completed.

The Lokpal will look into the complaints related to the scheme and will be endowed with the power to initiate action in any case of irregularity. The decision was taken in a meeting held at the Secretariat here on Friday.

Informing about the move, Chief Secretary Subhash Kumar said, “Based on Lokpals’ report, the guilty will be punished and FIRs can also be registered against the perpetrators. The Lokpal can also initiate action themselves in areas under their jurisdiction depending upon the nature of the complaint.”

Experts can also be included to facilitate easy settlement of cases and the information with the Lokpal will be kept confidential.

The Lokpals will submit their report of official activities of the previous financial year to the Chief Secretary, Secretary and State Nodal Department every year, he added.

“We have selected few names for the Lokpal. Request letters were invited before the selection for the job,” added Kumar.
