Dehradun: The Uttarakhand government has decided to lodge a strong protest against the Centre’s move to declare 135 km area from Gomukh to Uttarkashi under Eco -Sensitive Zone (ESZ).

The decision to protest against the proposed draft of the Ministry of Environment & Forests was taken in a high-level meeting which was chaired by Chief Secretary of the state Subhash Kumar at the Secretariat.

Kumar has also asked all departments to come up with their objections on the proposed draft of the Centre till July 22.

It may be noted that Tehri MP Vijay kumar Bahuguna has questioned the role of state government over the formation of eco-sensitive zone which has been taken seriously by the state government.

Emphasizing that the interests of the local people residing within the area of Gomukh-Uttarkashi would not be ignored, the Chief Secretary said, “The present draft is very objectionable. Declaring the 100 km area as ESZ would adversely affect the livelihood of local people. At the same time it would interrupt the development work in the region.”

Notably, state’s Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank has already registered his protest with the Union Government in this regard.
