Dehra Dun: Uttarakhand government on Sunday announced a hike of Rs one crore in the amounts given as Police Welfare Fund and Police Sports Fund, doubling both of them to Rs two crore.

Making the announcement at a function held at the police lines here to mark Smriti Diwas, Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna said his government was committed to look after the needs of the force.

Referring to Smriti Diwas, as an occasion to commemorate the supreme sacrifice of 10 CRPF personnel who died battling with Chinese security men on this day in 1959, the Chief Minister said, "We are grateful to those who laid down their lives to serve their motherland and are committed to take proper care of their dependants and kin."

Modernisation of the police force was among the priorities of his government, he said, adding efforts were on to equip the force so it could effectively take on the challenges of terror and Naxal violence.
