Dehradun: With only one gallows in the state, the Uttarakhand government is all set to initiate the construction of another gallows to avoid overruling the court’s decision. The search for a gallows place is on in Haridwar or Dehradun.

Notably, till date there is only one gallows in Almora which was built during the British regime. No one has been hanged there since India gained independence.

Presently, there are four convicts in the state who have been awarded death penalty out of which one is undergoing psychiatric treatment. His punishment would be executed only after the treatment is over. The other three convicts are lodged in Meerut jail and Uttarakhand jail.

Jail authorities are of the view that in the absence of a gallows outside Almora jail a situation of overruling the court’s decision may arise given the reason that transporting the convicts from Meerut and Uttarakhand to Almora may take time. Therefore, the authorities are mulling for a gallows in Garhwal.
