Dehradun: In order to receive grants from the central government, urban local bodies in Uttarakhand and elected Chairman of the Board shall now be under the purview of the Lokayukta, as per the 13th Finance Commission's recommendations. The proposal is being prepared in this regard while the final decision will be taken by the new government.

Under the recommendations of the 13th Finance Commission, the local bodies would be required to comply with the standards set by the Centre. Also, appointment of a Lokayukta for these bodies has been made compulsory.

According to the Law Department, there is no need for appointing a separate Lokayukta for the municipal bodies as they can be brought under the purview of the Lokayukta appointed by the state government.

A notification will be issued to bring the elected board and its President under the purview of the Lokayukta. However, it is not possible until the code of conduct is in force. But in the backdrop of the assembly elections this task will be taken up by the upcoming government in the state.

The draft of the notification has been prepared by the Urban Development Department. At present, barring the Chairman and the elected members of the board, only the employees of the local bodies come under the purview of the Lokayukta.
