New Delhi: VS Sampath on Monday assumed office as the new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India.
President Pratibha Patil had cleared his appointment on Wednesday evening.
Sampath joined the Election Commission of India as election commissioner in April 2009.
He succeeds S.Y. Quraishi as the CEC. A former bureaucrat, 62-year-old Veeravalli Sundaram Sampat has had stints in varied positions in Andhra Pradesh and Delhi.
He was Power Secretary at the Centre before he was appointed Election Commissioner in April, 2009.
Born on January 16, 1950, Sampath will be at the helm of Election Commission until January, 2015 when he attains 65 years.
Talking to media persons about his priorities, Sampath said he would work towards electoral reforms. An Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the 1973 batch, Sampath has held important positions in the government of Andhra Pradesh and at the central government.
